Mazda6 Bites the Dust in Canada, U.S.

Another car gets the axe. This one, frankly, is pretty sad news for driving enthusiasts.

Mazda has just announced that the Mazda6 midsize sedan will not return in North America for the 2022 model year. Production for our market will end in July.

In a statement, the company explained that the Mazda6 “faced adverse conditions in an ever-shrinking segment as consumers abandoned sedans in favour of taller, more versatile crossover vehicles.”

Three generations have been sold in Canada. However, the Mazda6 found just 1,049 takers in the country last year, ranking second-to-last among all midsize sedans, just ahead of the Kia K5/Optima.

That means we won’t get the anticipated next-generation model set to be built on a new RWD architecture and possibly motivated by a new inline six-cylinder engine, with styling inspired by the stunning Vision Coupe concept from the 2017 Tokyo Auto Show.

CX-3 Dropped in the U.S.

Meanwhile, we’ve also learned that the Mazda CX-3 will be dropped in the U.S. along with the Mazda6. It’s not a shocker as sales of this small crossover south of the border were quite poor.

In Canada, and particularly Quebec, the CX-3 is much more popular, though it’s been surpassed by the new CX-30.

“Mazda Canada will focus on continuously improving our award-winning CX-line of crossover vehicles, which includes the CX‑3, CX-30, CX‑5 and CX‑9,” the brand said. “In the near future, Mazda will grow the crossover lineup with its first battery electric vehicle, the MX-30, and an upcoming all-new crossover to be produced in the U.S.”

The Car Guide was able to get a confirmation from Mazda Canada that the CX-3 will return here for the 2022 model year. No major changes are planned, however.
