2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, Trail Models Get a Lift and More
Unlike the full-size Tundra which will be completely redesigned and re-engineered for the 2022 model year, the Tacoma midsize pickup must wait its turn.
However, there are some changes in store that will sure catch the attention of off-road driving enthusiasts. Let’s take a look.

2022 Tacoma TRD Pro
For 2022, the fearsome TRD Pro model gets TRD-tuned Fox internal bypass shocks along with new TRD-engineered upper control arms in forged aluminum. They’re part of a taller suspension lift–1.5 inches up front and 0.5 inches at the rear—which equates to improvements for trail and obstacle clearance thanks to a 36.4-degree approach angle, 24.7-degree departure angle and 26.6-degree breakover angle.
New black TRD wheels offer a wider track and are fitted with new Goodyear Territory all-terrain tires. Also, as you can see on the pictures, a flashy Electric Lime Metallic body colour is added to the mix for 2022. Previously available on the tiny Prius c hybrid, this head-turning hue will expand to other TRD models in the future, Toyota says.
The various logos and badges get some modifications, as well, while available new hood graphics complement the blacked-out hood scoop.
Featuring a 3.5-litre V6 engine that puts out 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, the 2022 Tacoma TRD Pro continues to offer a six-speed manual transmission along with a six-speed automatic.
2022 Tacoma Trail Edition
Introduced last year, the Trail Edition of the Tacoma is back, once again based on the SR5 4x4 Double Cab model. Toyota engineers lifted the front of the truck 1.1 inches thanks to taller coil springs, increasing ground clearance and the approach angle to 34 degrees in the process.
The rear suspension received attention, too. It is lifted 0.5 inches, resulting in improved departure and breakover angles (23.6 degrees and 26.4 degrees, respectively). The same new Goodyear Territory all-terrain tires can be found here, wrapping new bronze-finished wheels that complement the bronze-accented grille.
Four exterior colour choices are available, headlined by new Trail Edition option Lunar Rock. A new Trail Edition badge is fitted on the rear tailgate, and the rear bumpers are now colour-keyed to match the exterior paint colour. Obviously, the V6 is shared among all Tacomas, but unlike the TRD Pro this Trail Edition Trail can’t be had with the manual gearbox.
Pricing for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma models will be announced closer to their arrival in dealerships a few months from now.
