2022 Chevrolet Silverado Gets Modern Cabin, Rugged ZR2 Model
The fourth-generation Chevrolet Silverado was introduced three years ago and now’s the time for a mid-cycle update.
In addition to a rugged new ZR2 model aimed at off-road enthusiasts, Chevy’s full-size pickup gets a beautifully refreshed cabin and improved four-cylinder engine. Let’s take a closer look.

Chevrolet is going a step further than the Trail Boss package in order to please truck owners who like to tackle muddy trails, rocky terrain and everything in between. Powered by the 6.2-litre V8 engine, the new Silverado ZR2 features tow hooks and underbody skid plates, as well as a front camera built into the grille that maximizes visibility in difficult spots.
A unique Off-Road mode enables one-pedal driving even off the beaten path. Furthermore, engineers have increased approach and departure angles to 32.8 degrees and 23.3 degrees, respectively, in part thanks to new Multimatic shocks. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
Fantastic New Interior
The shifter is no longer mounted to the steering column. You’ll find it on the centre console instead. LT and higher models get a large 13.4-inch touchscreen for infotainment, while the instrument panel goes full digital with a 12.3-inch display. The top-line High Country stands out with elegant wood trim.
As you can see on the pictures, the exterior has been tweaked a little, too. Changes include revised grilles and headlights, among others.
There’s not much to report about under the hood of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado. One thing we like, though, is the upgraded base engine with a 30-percent stiffer crankshaft. The turbocharged 2.7-litre four-cylinder’s maximum torque is up from 348 pound-feet to a remarkable 420 pound-feet. Output is still rated at 310 horsepower, while towing capacity peaks at 9,500 pounds (previously 9,300 pounds) on 4x2 models.
Unlike Ford which is dropping its 3.0-litre diesel V6, General Motors has decided to keep the Silverado’s unit—at least for the time being. The 5.3-litre V8 with Dynamic Fuel Management and the aforementioned 6.2-litre V8 are back, too. The 4.3-litre V6 will not return and neither will the 5.3-litre V8 with Active Fuel Management.
On the safety front, the 2022 Silverado’s long list of features includes blind spot assist taking into account a trailer attached to the pickup. High Country models will offer Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving technology which will work even when trailering (though not during automatic lane changes).
Canadian pricing and availability for the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado have yet to be announced. Details about the 2022 GMC Sierra will also come at a later date. Expect most of the changes above to apply to the GMC, as well.
