2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV to Feature More Advanced AWD

Mitsubishi is giving us another look at the next-gen 2023 Outlander PHEV which, as previously reported, will roll out in Japan before the end of the first quarter of 2022 and in North America in the second half of the year.

The latest picture shows the vehicle in a front three-quarter view and confirms that the plug-in hybrid variant will be identical to the conventionally powered Outlander, except of course for the PHEV badges and charging port on the rear right fender.

Mitsubishi says the 2023 Outlander PHEV will use a more advanced version of its Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) technology, but fails to provide key technical details. While standard models employ braking control system to control the brake forces in the left and right wheels only on the front, the evolved S-AWC adds braking control system to the rear wheels. Also, drivers will have a choice of seven modes, two of which are specifically designed for gravel and snow.

We don’t know yet how much motor output and battery capacity will be increased (currently 221 hp and 13.8 kWh). One thing’s for sure, range will have to be significantly longer than the 39 km we have now in order to keep up with the Toyota RAV4 Prime (68 km) and Ford Escape PHEV (61 km), not to mention the Hyundai Tucson PHEV and Santa Fe PHEV as well as the Kia Sorento PHEV launching this fall with 50+ km.

Families, take note: the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will be able to accommodate up to seven passengers, unlike the current model that eliminates the tiny third-row seats. An official debut is expected to take place on October 27, so keep following The Car Guide to learn more.
