Pre-Owned Compact SUVs : Which Model Should You Choose?

Published on November 16, 2021 in Pre-owned vehicles by The Car Guide

Compact SUVs are extremely popular and there is plenty of choice for the customer. If your budget or priorities dictate the way you shop for used vehicles, you'll also have a wide selection of models to consider. Which one is best? It all depends on your needs and preferences. Even if some are generally more reliable than others, their maintenance history can change everything.

So, it's imperative to find out about their past. You should always conduct a thorough inspection, and take a test drive to make sure the driving experience is right for you. That said, in order to help you in your quest to find the perfect SUV, here are a few pointers and important things to know...

First, if we look at used compact SUVs from popular brands, the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V are always symbols of reliability and quality. The former certainly has the lowest long-term cost of ownership and, even though it's more expensive to buy, the difference is worth it. The latter proves to be solid, balanced, and also inexpensive in the long run, but buyers should look at 2016 or earlier models with the 2.4-litre engine, as those that followed with the 1.5-litre turbo engine have had more mechanical issues.

The very versatile and efficient Subaru Forester as well as the spacious Mitsubishi Outlander demonstrate great durability and are generally great buys. There is even a good chance that the used Outlander you find is still under warranty, given Mitsubishi's excellent coverage, especially regarding the powertrain.

Be careful when considering a used Nissan Rogue; its average quality and very fragile CVT transmission can be causes for concern. The Kia Sportage is a very good product as of 2017, but the engines have had their share of recalls. Moreover, it is known for its above-average fuel consumption. A Ford Escape is also a good choice, preferably without an EcoBoost engine.

Finally, if your budget allows you to consider a compact luxury SUV, the Acura RDX and Lexus NX are good values, as they are typically more reliable and less expensive to maintain than German models. Ideally, avoid the Volvo XC60, Jaguar F-Pace, Land Rover Discovery, and Alfa Romeo Stelvio, which are considered as risky purchases.

Again, a good, pre-purchase inspection is crucial. And opting for a certified pre-owned model is always wise, too.
