Mazda and Ram Fuel Pump Problems: What You Should Know

If you're currently shopping for a recent Mazda or Ram used vehicle, there's a specific item you should put on your checklist to avoid problems and possible accidents.

In some cases, the fuel pump could fail, according to a recall notice issued by Transport Canada. If this happens, the engine could run rough, lose power suddenly or fail to start.

The models affected are the 2018 Mazda3 and Mazda6, the 2018 to 2019 CX-5 and CX-9, and the 2019 CX-3 and MX-5, affecting 20,762 vehicles across the country.

A similar number of Ram trucks - 20,539 to be exact - are in the same situation right now. More precisely "Heavy Duty" models in 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 lines for the 2019 to 2020 model years.

In this case, it's the high-pressure fuel pump on the 6.7-litre Cummins diesel engine that could fail. In addition to the consequences described above, there is a possibility that a fuel leak could occur. In many cases, the "Check Engine" warning light will also turn on.

For both Mazda and Ram, the problem requires a new fuel pump. Other parts of the fuel system may need to be replaced as well. And let's not forget about updating the engine control module software.

Of course, these are not the only vehicles you need to watch out for when it comes to fuel pumps. Almost all 2019 (and some 2020) Honda (and some Acura) models have similar issues, for example. Make sure the part has been replaced on the model you're interested in and, at the same time, that any other recalls have been addressed.
