GMC Sierra EV Officially Teased, Reveal Coming in 2022

The Hummer EV is GMC’s new flagship and a powerful statement. Alas, few Canadian drivers will be able to afford one.

We’ve known for several months now that the brand will add a second, cheaper electric pickup at some point. On Wednesday, GMC released a first official teaser, confirming that it will be a battery-powered Sierra available exclusively in top Denali trim.

“Sierra Denali holds tremendous equity for GMC and our customers,” said Duncan Aldred, GMC vice president. “We now have an opportunity to evolve Sierra’s capabilities and technologies, as afforded by transitioning to all-electric propulsion while also elevating the luxurious design and comfort associated with Denali.”

The images only show the front end of the truck, but as you can see it looks significantly different from the refreshed and updated 2022 Sierra 1500. The grille is closed, obviously, and the contour is illuminated. Meanwhile, the headlights and daytime running lights have a unique signature and lighting sequence.

The Sierra EV will ride on GM’s Ultium platform similar to the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV that will be unveiled on January 5 at CES. And just like the latter it should provide a range of about 640 kilometres and feature four-wheel steering to improve handling and manoeuverability in tight spaces.

We don’t know when exactly the GMC Sierra EV will make its debut, but it will be sometime in 2022. Production at GM’s Factory ZERO plant in Detroit is expected to begin in the first half of 2023, with deliveries to follow later in the year, which means the vehicle will likely be sold as a 2024 model.

In addition to its Chevy sibling, this battery-powered Sierra will take on the Rivian R1TFord F-150 Lightning and Tesla Cybertruck, which will all have a sizable head start in the EV pickup race.
