2014-2021 Mitsubishi Outlander: What Should You Know Before Buying?

Published on January 4, 2022 in Pre-owned vehicles by The Car Guide

The Mitsubishi Outlander is a compact SUV renowned for its durability and excellent warranty, both of which make it a good vehicle to consider on the used market.

2022 gave us a new generation of the Outlander, offering an exterior design and interior environment that represents a radical shift from the older model, not to mention an engine shared with the Nissan Rogue. If that doesn't really appeal to you, here's what you need to know about the previous Outlander, which was sold from 2014 to 2021.

The Outlander is a spacious compact SUV that can be found in either a five- or seven-seat configuration, which is quite rare. However, the third-row seat is not very spacious and leaves minimal room in the trunk.

The base engine for this generation was a 2.4-litre four-cylinder producing 166 horsepower sent through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Mitsubishi's S-AWC all-wheel-drive system was optional. Other versions featured a 3.0-litre V6 that produced 224 horsepower, accompanied by a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine allows for a towing capacity of 3,000 pounds (3,500 pounds as of 2018), which more than the majority of its rivals.

You should also know that the Outlander's driving proves to be quite dynamic and safe, both in summer and winter, and its gas mileage is reasonable.

For the 2016 model year, this compact SUV underwent several improvements, ranging from platform revisions to suspension changes to subtle interior iterations. The silhouette, including the grille, was also tweaked.

Two years later, Mitsubishi added a plug-in hybrid version with about 200 horsepower (Outlander PHEV) and about 35 kilometres of electric range. If you're considering the PHEV, make sure you know the condition and capacity of the battery - which may have depleted over time.

Finally, the 2020 model year brought a large eight-inch touchscreen compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, all-wheel drive, and three rows of seats as standard equipment in all versions.

Regardless of your choice, we recommend that you opt for a certified pre-owned vehicle that has passed a multi-point inspection before signing the purchase contract. Also, make sure you are aware of its maintenance history and pedigree.
