New Vehicle Sales in Canada Up Nearly 7 Percent in 2021

Following a drop of 20 percent in 2020, when all hell broke loose with COVID-19, the auto industry rebounded in 2021, though not as much as many were hoping for due to the global chip shortage and other supply issues.

New light-duty vehicle sales in Canada rose 6.9 percent from the previous year, according to the Automotive News Data Center. At 1.66 million units, they were still about 300,000 short of the total achieved in 2019, however.

For the 13th consecutive year, Ford topped every other automaker, selling 243,447 new vehicles in the country. Toyota and General Motors were the runners-up with 225,215 and 217,475 units sold, respectively. Just like in the U.S., the Japanese juggernaut managed to beat GM in Canada.

Hyundai-Kia posted solid numbers, as well, finishing fourth with 210,377 units. Kia even beat its own Canadian sales record in 2021, delivering 79,198 new vehicles.

Some of the brands that increased their sales the most include Genesis (212.5 percent), Chrysler (150.1 percent), Mitsubishi (46.9 percent), Tesla (37.3 percent), Porsche (29.7 percent) and Volkswagen (25.1 percent).

Conversely, Fiat (-65.4 percent), Dodge (-51.7 percent), Jaguar (-13.9 percent), Buick (-3.8 percent), MINI (-3 percent) and Chevrolet (-2.6 percent) all had a much tougher year in 2021.

Unsurprisingly, Ford’s F-Series (F-150 and Super Duty) remained the best-selling vehicle in Canada with 116,401 units. As for passenger cars, the Honda Civic held off the rising Toyota Corolla with 43,556 units sold and thus kept its crown.

The Car Guide will highlight the top 10 best-selling cars and trucks of 2021 in the next few days, so stay tuned!
