Winter Maintenance: What Should You Look Out For?

Published on February 16, 2022 in Tips & Advice: Protect your car by The Car Guide

Many motorists are satisfied with weathering the winter by waiting impatiently for the return of the warm days, neglecting the maintenance of their vehicles for many months at a time.

But the cold season should not be a dead season for vehicles. They still need attention and care. What exactly should be done? Here are some reminders...

Oil and other fluids

The road and weather conditions in Quebec are often considered "very difficult" and the instructions contained in the owner's manual regarding "intense" usage must be followed. Temperature variations require special attention to the fluids in the car. When changing engine oil, synthetic oil is preferred. Also, don't let the fuel tank drop below a quarter of its capacity. Fill up your windshield washer fluid more regularly.

The mechanics

Under the body, certain parts are susceptible to extensive salt and corrosion damage. According to many auto mechanics, drive belts are often overlooked during maintenance. Have yours inspect them at the same time as every oil change. Also, don't forget the importance of checking the quality of spark plugs at regular intervals, even if they have a relatively long life.

The battery

Cold weather is the number one enemy of car batteries. Did you have your battery tested before winter? Good for you. Now you must avoid overtaxing it, leaving it inactive for a long period of time or not giving it a chance to recharge long enough during a road trip. Using a block heater is also a wise decision to make it easier to start the car and preserve the battery.

And the rest

Properly clearing snow from your car before you hit the road is important for safety, but also to prevent damage to the vehicle and water infiltration. Don't forget the wiper blades. They can wear out and break prematurely if you neglect them during the winter.

Then, don't wait until spring to wash the bodywork, either by yourself or at the car wash. Every layer of dirt and calcium you remove will repel rust, even with an annual preventive treatment.

Finally, take out the carpets from time to time to clean them and wash the surfaces (dashboard, seats, etc.) that can also be damaged by snow, salt, and other types of dirt.
