2015-2019 Subaru Outback: What You Should Know Before You Buy

Published on March 18, 2022 in Pre-owned vehicles by Louis-Philippe Dubé

With its excellent standard all-wheel drive system and its spacious interior (including a cargo area that can exceed 2,000 litres), the Subaru Outback is undoubtedly the vehicle for those who want ruggedness, versatility and off-road capabilities without having to turn to an SUV.

This wagon, which shares many components with the Legacy sedan, has wisely and discreetly evolved over the years, and it is sometimes difficult to distinguish one generation from another. The one currently on the market is the sixth generation and was introduced for the 2020 model year, but used vehicle inventories are mostly filled with older generation Subaru Outbacks (2015 to 2019). Sounds appealing? Let us help you make a good decision by telling you what we know about this model.

Timeless Styling

As we mentioned above, the Outback's looks essentially stayed the same, while the main changes reside in the headlights and the grille. Subaru's motto was to offer progress on all other fronts: comfort, safety, finish, quality, quietness, technology, performance, efficiency and driving dynamics, both on the road and off-road.

And it succeeded!

Four or Six-Cylinders

In terms of powertrains, the base 2.5i models featured a 175-horsepower flat-four mated to a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable automatic (CVT) called Lineartronic . The Outback 3.6Rs relied on a 256 horsepower flat-six paired with the CVT exclusively. This engine did not follow for the 2020 redesign.

Both engines run on regular gasoline, the first being obviously more frugal with an average rating of as low as 8.3 L/100 km, but slower when accelerating and during pick-ups. The other burns 10.5 L/100 km, but offers more performance. It can also tow heavier loads (3,000 pounds compared to 2,700 pounds). Either way, the original manufacturer's warranty lasted 5 years or 100,000 km.

The Outback got a facelift for 2018 with redesigned bumpers and a new grille, but no real changes under the hood - except for the manual gearbox being axed. The CVT also came with a feature called X-Mode that acts as cruise and traction control on hill descent.

Comfort Over Performance

On the road, the Outback prioritizes comfort over handling. Owners have complained about the 2.5-litre engine being noisy. Also, the oil consumption of both is something to watch out for. Off the beaten track, the real fun begins. However, check if the example you are interested in shows signs of wear or damage to the lower body and under the vehicle.

Finally, know that a dozen recalls have been issued for the 2015 to 2019 Subaru Outback in Canada. Nothing serious except maybe those affecting the steering column and the fuel pump. Make sure the fixes have been conducted.

Happy shopping!
