Alfa Romeo Midsize SUV Planned, Won’t Come Anytime Soon
Alfa Romeo is in a better position since new CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato arrived and FCA-PSA merged to become Stellantis.
After finally unveiling its brand new Tonale compact SUV in February, complete with an available plug-in hybrid powertrain, and later confirming the launch of its first fully electric vehicle sometime in 2024, which will be smaller and possibly called “Brennero,” Alfa Romeo now has eyes on a larger model that will serve as a new flagship.

Unsurprisingly, it will be an SUV. Speaking with Automotive News in a recent interview, Imparato talked about giving the Stelvio a big brother, namely a midsize SUV that would take on the likes of the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE.
Few details are available at this point. We have no idea what it might be called, but it’s said to be planned for 2027. Yeah, that’s a really long time from now.
As previously reported, Alfa Romeo will sell only electric vehicles in Europe, China and North America starting in 2027, meaning the new flagship SUV will not offer a gasoline-powered or hybrid variant.
Should we expect Alfa Romeo to abandon cars like the Giulia in the process? Not at all, Imparato assured, claiming the Giulia does have a future and the next generation will be a pure EV.
In the meantime, remember that Alfa Romeo is expanding the Giulia and Stelvio lineups for 2023 with the addition of an Estrema limited edition that slots between the Veloce and Quadrifoglio models. Ordering is now open with availability in the third quarter of 2022. Pricing starts at $66,995 for the sedan and $69,295 for the SUV, plus a destination charge of $2,095.
