GMC Gives the Canyon an AT4X variant

Car manufacturers are multiplying “rugged” variants throughout their lineups. And GMC has recently unveiled an AT4X variant of the Sierra 1500, a more hardcore version of the already tough-looking AT4 that aims to satisfy the needs of more serious off-road drivers.

GMC announced today that its mid-size Canyon pickup would be getting its own AT4X variant. Just like the Sierra 1500 AT4X, the GMC Canyon AT4X will get all the more mechanically rugged bits similar to its older sibling.

The teaser image provided by the manufacturer is not very revealing. It only discloses a few clues like badges and mud tires. But looking at the already-fully unveiled Sierra 1500 AT4X’s equipment list, we can imagine that this new Canyon will probably imitate its counterpart at Chevrolet, the Colorado ZR2.

The AT4 version of the Canyon sports moderate off-road-ready components, such as a slightly raised suspension, skid plates and a model-specific set of tires. Hopefully, the AT4X badging will up the ante with electronic locking differentials and a Multimatic-made DSSV suspension. The Car Guide will publish new details about the GMC Sierra AT4X as they become available.
