Chevrolet Trax to Get Second Generation, Debut Planned for This Year

A few weeks ago, reports indicated that the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore would end their production this summer and wouldn’t be back after the 2022 model year. As it turns out, that was only half the truth.

The current-generation models will indeed retire, but now the automaker is saying that a second generation will be unveiled at around the same time.

In a brief statement to Autoblog, a Chevrolet spokesperson assured the company “does not plan to abandon the important entry-level small SUV segment.” There is no word yet about Buick, however.

Initially launched for the 2013 model year, the Trax received a significant mid-cycle update for 2017 but is now largely eclipsed within the Chevy lineup by the new Trailblazer. Consider this: Canadian sales of the Trax fell 38.4 percent to 2,395 units in 2021, while the Trailblazer’s jumped a whopping 207.4 percent to 7,641 units.

Is it simply a matter of styling and technology? Maybe. While it’s too early to get some details on the future Trax, GM Authority reports that it will adopt a coupe-style crossover profile with development led by GM Korea.

Following the debut later in 2022, production is expected to begin in the first few months of 2023, once again at the same assembly plant as the Trailblazer in South Korea. We’ll keep you posted.
