Ferrari SP48 Unica Continues Maranello’s One-Off Series

Following the Omologata in 2020 and BR20 in 2021, Ferrari is back with another one-off build from its Special Projects program.

Designed for a long-standing customer who was deeply involved in every step of its creation, the SP48 Unica is based on the F8 Tributo platform and, as the name says, unique in the world.

Some of the lines are obviously similar, but the entire body has been redesigned, starting with the arrow-shaped front end. The headlight clusters are new, as well, and the 3D-style, hexagonal mesh pattern of the lower front grilles is spectacular, just like the wheels.

The transition from the custom reddish-orange body colour to the contrasting black accents is especially clear. The striking visor effect of the front is further enhanced by a reduction in the size of the side windows and the elimination of the rear window, the latter replaced by a solid panel that connects the roof with the tail. Claustrophobic drivers need to stay away from this car.

The overhead view emphasizes the central section of the roof which includes a graphic representation of the air intakes set into the rear part of the carbon-fibre engine cover before the rear wing. Ferrari says the biggest changes compared to the F8 Tributo’s styling include the air intakes for cooling flows for the engine on the front bumper and beneath the rear spoiler. Each has a deep procedural grille, every section of which is optimally angled to maximize the amount of air passing through.

There’s no mention about the engine, so it appears the twin-turbocharged 3.9-litre V8 is carried over. With 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque, acceleration from 0-100 km/h can be as quick as 2.9 seconds.

The company is not showing the interior, either, but says that specially developed black laser-perforated Alcantara is used on the seats and many other surfaces, along with iridescent reddish-orange fabric that matches the exterior colour. The hexagonal motif of the grilles can be found here, and matte carbon fibre accents provide further distinction.

So, how much for the SP48 Unica? Only the buyer who commissioned this one-off knows the answer to that, but keep in mind that the production F8 Tributo exceeds $320,000 in Canada.
