Should You Buy a Pre-Owned Honda HR-V or Wait For the New One?

Published on May 24, 2022 in Pre-owned vehicles by The Car Guide

The second-generation Honda HR-V sub-compact SUV is coming for model year 2023, and the first images and details available as of today lead us to believe that it was entirely redesigned and made ready to face a stronger-than-ever competition.

It will have very little in common with its predecessor, which was introduced in 2016 and hardly stood out from the crowd.

Based on the 2022 Civic platform instead of the defunct Fit, this new HR-V will be bigger and sleeker, with a longer wheelbase that will improve interior space. Honda also talks about increased visibility, a more responsive engine and a new independent rear suspension that will enhance driveability and ride smoothness.

Should you wait for this new version? We still don’t know about the delivery times and the price difference with the current HR-V, but you should expect a substantial increase to reflect the market’s new reality.

Now, we must also say that the current-generation HR-V still has an excellent resale value, some specimens even selling for a higher price than a brand-new model. For example, we found 2020 Sport HR-Vs with a little more than 20,000 km at prices hovering around $35,000.

If safety, reliability and fuel economy are among your main concerns, buying a pre-owned Honda HR-V is a wise decision. The Magic Seat backseat, which will certainly be found in the new model, is also a strong argument. Rear visibility is limited and the engine makes noisy accelerations, but will it really be better for 2023? That’s a good question.

Our best advice is to try an HR-V and see if it meets your current and future needs well enough. While waiting for the new version, you should also compare it with other small SUVs like the Subaru Crosstrek, the Kia Seltos and the Nissan Qashqai.
