Volkswagen Golf R to Get Its Own Special Edition in Canada
The completely-new-for-2022 Volkswagen Golf R is an impressive hot hatch for many reasons. In fact, along with the Golf GTI, it won The Car Guide’s Best New Car of the Year award for 2022.
Earlier this week, the German automaker announced a special edition celebrating the 20 years the Golf R has been on the market. It will be the most powerful production Golf ever with 328 horsepower instead of 315.

Also, a unique option called Emotion Start will make the car rev to 2,500 rpm on startup for a more aggressive sound—great for owners, not so great for the neighbours. And naturally, a series of distinctive touches can be found all around, such as “20” badges and 19-inch two-tone wheels.
Volkswagen plans to offer this milestone Golf R for one year only, obviously, first in Europe but also in the U.S. and other markets.
Alas, we won’t be getting it here. At least not as described above. Volkswagen Canada’s head of public relations, Thomas Tetzlaff, told The Car Guide the company is working on its own special edition for Canada.
Details will be released in a few months’ time since the project is still at an early stage, but it “should be pretty cool,” Tetzlaff added. The car will most likely be a 2023 model.
As for pricing, expect something close to $50,000. The 2022 Golf R currently starts at $44,995 with the manual transmission and $46,395 with the DSG, not counting freight and PDI.
