Is the Old Ram Dakota Still a Good Option?

Published on June 30, 2022 in Pre-owned vehicles by The Car Guide

The Dodge/Ram Dakota was dropped at the end of model year 2011 due to low sales, but considering the current popularity of pickups and the renewed interest for more compact and affordable models, it would only makes sense to bring back the Ram 1500‘s little brother on the North American market.

While we wait for that to happen (fingers crossed), is the old Ram Dakota still a good option if you’re looking for an affordable pre-owned mid-size pickup ?

First, you must know that the third (and last) generation Dakota was sold from 2005 to 2011 inclusively, so, its chassis and design might show some age. You can find it in several configurations: extended-cab or crew-cab (with four real doors), short or long bed, and two or four-wheel drive. Three trim levels are available: ST, SXT and SLT.

V6 Or V8

The 3.7-litre V6 produces 210 horsepower, which is not a lot compared to today’s standards. However, the 4.7-litre V8 has been increased to 302 horsepower during the 2008 update. This engine is more refined and fuel efficient than the former, and with its 329 ft-lb of torque, it boasts a 7,500-pound towing capacity, the best in its category at the time.

The two-metre bed of the extended-cab version is significantly longer than the 1.87 metres of its competitor, the Toyota Tacoma. The Dakota’s frame with hydroformed side rails ensures solidity and stiffness, which gives it stable handling and reduces body roll in corners. It also has a smoother ride than the Tacoma.

The Dakota offers more space than its contemporary rivals too, but its cabin finish and materials are not nearly as good as in the Tacoma or the Honda Ridgeline. It also lacks the flat and sturdy footrest found in those two, and it only has one lever on the left of the steering wheel to control the flashers and wipers.

Some Criticism

The rather mediocre braking (consider replacing the brakes), the uncomfortable rounded backrests and the tiny glove compartment are negative points worth mentioning.

As for its reliability and ownership cost, the Dakota is within the average for mid-size pickups from the early 2010s. Its 3.7-litre V6 has had several issues, especially at the beginning, but with disciplined maintenance, both the V6 and V8 can reach 300,000 kilometres.
