VinFast Could Launch Electric Pickup After Its Five SUVs

Published on July 4, 2022 in Electric by Guillaume Rivard

Vietnamese automaker VinFast’s desire to break through the North American market logically starts with spacious SUVs like the VF 8 and VF 9, due to arrive later this year, then three smaller models including the VF 5, VF 6 and VF 7, which are expected sometime next year.

But what if there’s more to come? Could a pickup follow down the line? It’s possible according to a high-ranking VinFast executive, Craig Westbrook. And why not? Electric pickups are the next big thing, from the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T to future models like the Chevrolet Silverado EV and Volkswagen’s Scout pickup.

Incidentally, VinFast filed a patent application back in 2020 for a futuristic pickup concept designed by Italdesign. The idea at the time involved an internal combustion engine, but the company could easily change its mind and go electric instead.

If VinFast does indeed launch a pickup, production will most likely take place at the brand new assembly plant that’s slated to be built in the U.S. in the second half of 2024.

By the way, 2024 is also the year when VinFast will make changes to its unique and somewhat controversial battery subscription program. As previously reported, there are two options to choose from: a Fixed plan with unlimited km and a Flexible plan with 500 km plus an extra charge for every additional km.

Customers who make a reservation for the VF 8 or VF 9 this year and subscribe to the Fixed plan will be offered a permanent subscription fee for the product’s lifetime. Moreover, VinFast commits to providing a lifetime battery warranty covering all maintenance and repair costs and will replace the battery for free when charging capacity dips below 70 percent.

As a brand new player in Canada, VinFast faces quite a challenge, and reliability remains a concern. On the plus side, some sweet incentives are on the table for customers.
