New Honda Civic Type R to be Extremely Limited in Canada

Published on July 8, 2022 in News by Guillaume Rivard

Can’t wait to see the next-generation 2023 Honda Civic Type R? Join the club. A camouflaged prototype made its first public appearance in North America at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course last weekend, serving as lead vehicle at the start of the Honda Indy 200 race.

That came a few months after the Type R set a new track record for a front-wheel drive car at the legendary Suzuka Circuit, home to the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix.

The 2023 Civic Type R will go on sale later this year and an official reveal is coming up very soon, but in the meantime we have some pretty depressing news to share with you.

A member of the CivicXI forum, who claims to be working for a large Honda dealer in Quebec, says Honda Canada has provided details about the new Civic Type R’s availability. There will reportedly be just three model years—2023, 2024 and 2025—but the worst part is that only 546 units will be allocated to the entire Canadian market. Not annually, but for the whole three years.

Also, it appears only a small number of Honda dealers will be able to get them, more specifically high-profile dealers and those that have sold at least five Type R units per year in the past. The dealer this Honda employee is working for has reportedly been told that it will have a maximum of seven cars including two or three for the first year.

Man, talk about a disappointment for potential customers if this turns out to be true. Not only will there be very few units to order, but you can also be sure that Honda won’t hesitate to increase the price of the Civic Type R, which started at $46,200 the last time we checked.

Keep following The Car Guide between now and the introduction of the new 2023 Honda Civic Type R. We’ll have all the details, specs and pictures you’re looking for. Will it be more potent than the outgoing 306-horsepower model? Stay tuned!
