2024 GMC Sierra HD Gets Big Update, Two New Trims Including AT4X

Just a few days after the introduction of the refreshed and upgraded 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD (not to mention the 2023 Ford Super Duty and Ram 2500 Rebel), its GMC sibling is showing up with similar improvements.

The 2024 Sierra HD will start to arrive in Canadian dealerships early next year, offering new Denali Ultimate and AT4X models (the latter to be available later in 2023) just like the light-duty Sierra 1500.

Enhanced Duramax V8

While the 6.6-litre gasoline V8 is unchanged for 2024 (401 hp, 464 lb-ft.), the 6.6-litre Duramax turbo-diesel V8 brings more muscle to the table. It now generates 470 horsepower (+25) and 975 pound-feet of torque (+65), with low-end torque production increased by up to 25 percent for improved performance at low speeds or climbing grades, and particularly when trailering. Max towing capacity is rated at 22,500 pounds with 2500HD models and 36,000 pounds with 3500HD models.

Furthermore, the proven Allison 10-speed automatic transmission is now standard equipment for both the Silverado HD’s powertrains (the gas engine used to come with a six-speed unit). In the name of safety, GMC added sensors to warn the driver if the vehicle and trailer weight exceed the Gross Combined Weight Rating.

Trailering is made even easier with other new tech features for 2024 including Adaptive Cruise Control with Trailer (which accounts for additional drag and increased braking distances when towing a trailer), Enhanced Transparent Trailer view (allowing it to work with fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers) and Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert (which extends the blind zone area of interest to help enhance situational awareness when trailering).

Extra Style and Luxury

The 2024 GMC Sierra HD lineup boasts various styling revisions up front (particularly the grille), animated lighting when approaching and starting the vehicle, new wheels on most trim levels and six additional body colours including Volcanic Red Tintcoat. The cabin gets new finishes, colours and stitching designs for a more premium look and feel.

The brand new Sierra HD Denali Ultimate raises the bar for style and luxury with a unique front fascia and 20-inch wheels, GMC badging in Vader chrome, a MultiPro tailgate with a built-in Kicker audio system and power assist steps as standard.

It’s even more impressive inside, mind you, with an Alpine Umber interior combining full-grain leather appointments with open-pore Paldao wood in a darkened finish. New 16-way power-adjustable and massaging front seats, premium microsuede headliner, visors and A- and B-pillar trim, as well as a 12-speaker Bose Premium series audio system with etched stainless-steel speaker grilles are also part of the package.

As you can see, technology is vastly improved, too, following the updates that were made to the regular Sierra for 2022. Check out the 13.4-inch centre touchscreen (highly configurable and featuring a “split-screen” view) and the available 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Also in front of the driver is an available 15-inch colour head-up display. The Sierra HD’s infotainment system integrates Google built-in (on all trims except Pro) and is compatible with both wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto.

Pricing for the 2024 GMC Sierra HD will be announced closer to launch in the first quarter of 2023.
