Hyundai Unveils N Vision 74 Concept in Los Angeles

Manufacturers are scrambling to offer efficient electric vehicles without compromising what their brands stand for. But it’s not an easy task. Hyundai has been putting a lot of effort into building a strong N performance brand in the last years, the Korean manufacturer needs to transport this division identity in the electric era. And the world is watching!

Enter the N Vision 74 concept, a daring design feat that seems to be inspired by a mix of DeLorean and an Audi Quattro, but it officially pulls its roots from the 1974 Hyundai Pony Coupe concept. While Hyundai gave the public a few exciting renders of the concept earlier this year, the concept was finally unveiled at the Los Angeles today.

This is the latest thing to come out of Hyundai’s N performance division stable and it hides a unique hybrid powertrain that that aims at pairing electric efficiency with sheer amounts of performance.

This battery-electric FCEV combination uses a fuel cell stack mounted in the front that delivers a peak output of 95 Kw combined with a 62.4kWh battery mounted in the floor for a low centre of gravity. Each rear wheel is fitted with an independent motor.

The performance figures are staggering, with 661 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. Power distribution can be modulated between the two motors, making the N Vision 74 a very capable track beast.

The hydrogen tanks are mounted in the rear and feed the fuel cell that can charge the 62kWh battery – a battery which retains its 800V fast-charging capacity. According to Hyundai, this provides maximum flexibility for drivers looking to go from the road to the track.

Heat management is a key challenge in any electric car, especially in the high performance segments. That’s why the N Vision 74’s battery, fuel cell, and motor cooling systems are completely independent from one another in order to keep everything at optimal performance.

We don’t know if this concept will ever see the light of day in production form. All we know is that we absolutely love it when manufacturers pair vintage looks with state of the art EV technologies.
