2023 Jeep Compass Gets Standard Turbo Engine and 4WD

A year removed from a series of styling revisions, interior upgrades and new technologies aimed at attracting more customers, the Jeep Compass returns for 2023 with major changes under the hood.

Forget the old, naturally aspirated 2.4-litre four-cylinder mill that produces 180 horsepower. Instead, you’ll find a new turbocharged 2.0-litre engine putting out 200 horsepower and 221 lb-ft. of torque. A nice improvement, for sure, but far from matching the 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. delivered by the similarly motivated Cherokee.

Jeep says Compass drivers can expect superior performance along with high fuel economy. That remains to be seen since Natural Resources Canada has yet to post its official ratings.

The turbo engine is mated to an equally new eight-speed automatic transmission—shared with the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and Gladiator–that replaces the existing six- and nine-speed units. It is of course uniquely calibrated in Trailhawk trim for better off-road performance.

Another significant change for 2023 is that all Compass models are now blessed with four-wheel drive. The base system is the fully automatic Jeep Active Drive 4x4. Meanwhile, the Compass Trailhawk is still the only one to make use of Jeep Active Drive Low with a two-speed transfer case and a 20:1 crawl ratio. In both cases, Selec-Terrain is available with a choice of drive modes.

Drivers will also notice improved handling via a larger rear stabilizer bar and unique tuning of the power steering system. In other news, wheel designs have been updated and range from 17-19 inches in size.

The 2023 Jeep Compass comes in five trim levels including Sport, North, Altitude, Limited and Trailhawk, plus a special-edition Compass (RED) helping fund life-saving health programs around the world through a partnership with the (RED) campaign. It’s scheduled to start arriving in showrooms in early 2023. All we’re missing are pricing details.
