The Car Guide Podcast: Manual Transmission On EVs and Car-Feature Subscriptions

Published on January 3, 2023 in News by The Car Guide

Automakers go through great lengths in an effort to make electric vehicles "feel" more like their gas-powered counterparts. The Porsche Taycan emits a simulated engine noise, while Dodge has added a fake supercharged V8 sound to the new Dodge Charger Daytona SRT concept.

There are also those who plan on introducing manual transmissions on EVs, an add-on that aims to provide a more interactive experience. Needless to say, this piece of hardware (or software?) has a questionable use in an electric vehicle; in most cases, it doesn't really serve a mechanical purpose.

In the latest episode of The Car Guide Podcast LP and Gab discuss this particular phenomenon, but also the new automotive trend of car-feature subscriptions. This "automotive paywall" principle enables manufacturers to propose pay-as-you-go features. For example, 18 $/month for heated seats, or 500 $/year for extra horsepower.

One question remains: if equipment is installed on the vehicle, doesn't it rightfully belong to the owner ?

Listen to our experts on the question.
