All-New Alfa Romeo Tonale to Start Under $45,000 in Canada

Alfa Romeo has announced pricing for the all-new Tonale, which slots right below the Stelvio in the Italian brand’s lineup and happens to share many components—including powertrains—with the equally new Dodge Hornet.

The Tonale has a starting Canadian manufacturer's suggested retail price of $44,995 plus $2,095 destination charge in base Sprint trim. Meanwhile, the Tonale PHEV starts at $54,995.

More upscale Veloce models require an extra of $1,500 with the standard Tonale and $2,500 with the Tonale PHEV.

Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine rated at 256 hp and 295 lb-ft. of torque. The PHEV variant is the real star with a turbocharged 1.3-litre engine paired with a 90kW electric motor and 15.5-kWh lithium-ion for a total of 285 hp and an estimated zero-emission range of more than 48 km. The exact range has yet to be announced by Natural Resources Canada. In order for customers to qualify for the $5,000 federal EV rebate, it has to be at least 50 km.

“We look forward to launching the all-new Alfa Romeo Tonale and competing in the premium compact sport-utility vehicle segment with the brand’s first plug-in hybrid offering,” said Larry Dominique, Senior Vice President and Head of Alfa Romeo North America. “The Tonale drops right into one of the largest volume segments with best-in-class 285 horsepower and more than 48 kilometres of electric range as the next generation of electrified Alfa Romeo vehicles make their way into the market.”

The Car Guide will have a first-drive review of the new Alfa Romeo Tonale in the coming months, so watch this space for more information.
