Even the Wienermobile Got Its Catalytic Converter Stolen
Despite increased scrutiny and prevention efforts, catalytic converter thefts continue to be a big problem across Canada and the U.S. Pickups and commercial vehicles are particularly targeted by wrongdoers since their extra ground clearance makes these components easier to access.
One of the latest victims is none other than Oscar Mayer’s world-famous Wienermobile. We kid you not.

As reported by local media, one of the six examples of the iconic 27-foot-long hot dog on wheels stopped by Las Vegas during a promotional tour and got its catalytic converter stolen while parked near a hotel. It had to make an emergency visit at a repair shop and receive a temporary fix to continue on its tour.
Seriously, if thieves have the guts to take on such a large and attention-grabbing truck, no vehicle is safe.
What’s the Big Deal With Catalytic Converters, Anyway?
A catalytic converter is a key part of the vehicle's exhaust system that primarily works to reduce emissions by managing engine gases more efficiently. It is located in the middle of the vehicle, between the engine's exhaust manifold and the pipe that leads to the exhaust pipes (muffler) at the back.
It is an important part, but it also contains valuable metals: rhodium, palladium and platinum. They are very resistant and can remain efficient for decades. On the other hand, replacing a catalytic converter can cost several hundred to upwards of a few thousand dollars.
The price of these has been steadily rising. Hence, it's easy to understand the appeal for thieves. Rhodium, which is one of the rarest elements on the planet today, has become 10 times more expensive than gold.
Some Advice to Prevent Catalytic Converter Theft
Waking up one morning and finding out that your catalytic converter was stolen can be upsetting. By the way, you’d notice its absence right away because your car would get very noisy and would produce more smoke than usual, not to mention your engine operating irregularly at all speeds.
To prevent your catalytic converter from being stolen, here are some precautions you can take:
- If you have a garage, store your vehicle in it as often as possible;
- Park it in a well-lit area, against a wall or close to other low vehicles;
- Consider installing motion-activated lights;
- Have your VIN engraved on your catalytic converter and spray it with a bright heat resistant paint to discourage thieves and make the resale more difficult at the scrapyard;
- Get an anti-theft device. Some look like wire mesh cages that can be bolted around the catalytic converter. A Kevlar and steel wire strap that is very hard to cut can also be added.
If this happens to you, CAA reminds you to first contact the police (as this is theft), then call your insurer and immediately send your vehicle to the garage, ideally on a tow truck to avoid any risk of poisoning from gases entering the cabin.
