Toronto 2010 : Last prizes given out by the AJAC

As a starter for the Toronto International AutoShow, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, through a press conference, has announced the names of the last winners to join the previous nine, chosen in as many different categories.

The 2010 Car of the Year

Of all the prizes given out, the 2010 Canadian Car of the Year award is certainly the most important. The winner this year is the Volkswagen Golf GTI. For John White, CEO of Volkswagen Canada, “the Golf GTI is the heart and soul of Volkswagen, and it is with great pride that we accept this prestigious prize.”

The 2010 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year

After the Car of the Year title, the most important is the Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year. This year, The Subaru Outback has well deserved this title. Mr. Katsushiro Yokoyama, CEO at Subaru declared: “It is a great honour to receive this prize from the AJAC for this intelligently designed vehicle, equipped with top notch engineering and exceptional security features.”

Best Design for 2010

A jury composed of Mr.Paul Deutschman, independent Canadian designer, Mr. Ken Cummings, teacher in automobile design at Humber College, and Robert Cumberford, design critic for Automobile magazine, had a hard time determining the best design. Finally, the BMW 335d came out the winner.

The finalists were: Audi A5, BMW 335d and Ford Taurus/SHO

The Best New Technology for 2010

Presented by Shell Canada, this prize was created to allow a group of technical journalists from the AJAC to reveal the new innovations in technology that are important to consumers. In 2010, Audi took the pole position for it’s technological approach called “Drive Select”.

The New Green Technology for 2010

Also presented by Shell Canada, this prize rewards the manufacturer that has designed vehicles which consume less energy and, most importantly, are more respectful of the environment. This year, laurels to Ford for it’s new generation hybrid technology and it’s SmartGauge system, which is now offered on many new Ford products.
