Volkswagen Golf R 20th Anniversary Gets 500-Unit Run for Canada

Just like it did last year in Europe, Volkswagen is now adding a special-edition Golf R to its Canadian lineup to mark the high-powered hatchback’s two decades of success.

Don’t waste any time, though, because the new 2023 Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition, similar to the Golf GTI 40th Anniversary Edition, will be limited to around 500 units in Canada.

On the outside, the car is easily discernable with 19-inch Estoril wheels finished in Gloss Black and fitted with 235/35 summer performance tires. The panoramic power sunroof, which is one of the rare options on the Golf R, is standard equipment on all 20th Anniversary models.

Available body colours include Lapiz Blue Metallic, Deep Black Pearl and Pure White, with a limited allocation of vehicles for each. The mirror caps are finished in Lapiz Blue on Pure White and Deep Black units, and gloss black on those painted in Lapiz Blue.

In all cases, the “R” logos—on the bumpers and front fenders—are finished in blue, while “20th Anniversary” badges adorn the B-pillars. Elsewhere, the puddle lights project “20 R” onto the pavement below the door.

The interior stands out with “R” logos finished in blue on the front seatbacks and on the steering wheel clasp. Additionally, the dashboard and front door trim feature genuine carbon fibre inserts for the first time in a production Volkswagen vehicle.

What doesn’t change is the 315-horsepower, turbocharged EA888 evo4 TSI engine under the hood combined with a torque-vectoring AWD system and adaptive damping system.

The 2023 Volkswagen Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition can be ordered now starting at $50,995 with the six-speed manual transmission and $52,395 with the seven-speed DSG. That’s $2,500 above the price of a stock Golf R.
