BMW Motorrad Unveils CE 02 e-Motorbike

Published on July 7, 2023 in Electric by Louis-Philippe Dubé

While carmakers are fighting for batteries, materials and motors in the race towards electrification, the motorcycle world is following at a distance and doesn't seem to be in much of a hurry. Adapting an electric powertrain to a motorcycle comes with its own set of challenges, technical peculiarities such as ensuring the system's weatherproofing, as well as offering attractive range and performance, but also financial factors are all part of the variables.

Today, BMW Motorrad is taking a step forward by presenting the 2024 CE 02, a small two-wheeled urban machine that classifies can be a scooter or a motorcycle depending on the variant. Based on the CE 02 concept unveiled in 2021, it joins the CE 04 electric eScooter already on the market.

With a trendy look that's far more "radical" than a traditional scooter, it's obviously aimed at a young, urban clientele for whom range is not a deal breaker.

A Top Speed of 95 Km/h

The CE 02 will be built in two models with two distinct power levels. The first is rated at 4 kW, weighs 119 kg and can reach speeds of up to 45 km/h. But this one won't be available un Canada. The one we're getting is the 11 kW (15 hp/40.6 lb-ft of torque) version, weighing 132 kg with a top speed of 95 km/h. This version of the CE 02 can travel up to 90 kilometres (according to WMTC standards) before running out of battery power.

As for recharging, it takes around 5 hours with the included 0.9 kW charger. An optional, more powerful 1.5 kW charger will complete the task in 3.5 hours.

Driving Modes and Accessories

Two driving modes are also available: "Flow" and "Surf". The former offers a smoother experience with a moderate throttle response, while the latter is more dynamic with sharper feedback. An optional "Flash" mode pushes the CE 02's dynamic characteristics to the extreme.

At the front, the CE 02 features a small TFT screen that displays vital information such as battery charge status and speed. Owners wishing to personalize their CE 02 can also choose from an extensive catalogue of options. This includes equipment such as luggage racks, a smartphone holder and even heated grips.
