Tokyo, Japan—Lexus is aiming to go all-electric by 2030 with a brand new architecture that will underpin an entire lineup of vehicles, two of which are being previewed by the LF-ZC and LF-ZL concepts at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo.

Both are expected to turn into production models and hit the road sometime in 2026.

The LF-ZC (Lexus Future Zero-emission Catalyst) concept’s design theme of "Provocative Simplicity" represents an evolution of Lexus' unique identity while elevating aerodynamic performance to new heights, as evidenced by a drag coefficient of 0.20.

“The model forms the catalyst for new experiences in the electric age, including elevated driving dynamics, uncompromised design and new exclusive services,” Lexus says.

The LF-ZC features sharp lines, a low centre of gravity, Direct4 electronic AWD and steer-by-wire technology pioneered by the new Lexus RZ electric crossover. There is no mechanical link between the steering wheel and the front wheels. Instead, a sensor monitors steering angle and actuators turn the wheels.

The electric sports sedan concept also stands out with what Lexus calls an Intelligent Cockpit, which features situation-based functionality where users can access the functions they need, when they need them, through a new "Arene OS" software platform. Utilizing advanced AI technology, the next-generation voice recognition system will provide them with a service experience reminiscent of conversing with an attentive and accommodating butler. What’s more, the advanced navigation system makes route and drive mode recommendations that align with the driver's preferences by considering their daily activity patterns and mood.

The interior of the LF-ZC is highlighted by recycled and sustainable materials, primarily bamboo, while the panoramic roof floods the cabin with natural light. Multiple touchscreens provide access to the various functions including audio, navigation, HVAC and more. A head-up display helps keep the driver’s eyes on the road. The concept also has cameras replacing the side mirrors, but those may not be carried over to the production model coming to North America.

What about range and all that stuff? The LF-ZC uses next-generation, high-performance prismatic batteries to achieve approximately twice the range of conventional EVs, though Lexus didn’t give a specific number. Oh, and we forgot to mention the new modular body structure formed through gigacasting, which splits the vehicle body into three parts: front, centre and rear.

The LF-ZL (Lexus Future Zero-emission Luxury) represents a future Lexus flagship luxury model with electric power. Standing 5.3 metres long, a bit more than 2 metres wide and 1.7 metres tall, with a wheelbase of 3.35 metres, this concept is as massive as it gets.

The cabin puts on a real show with space aplenty, opulent materials and a serene atmosphere. It leverages the full capabilities of the Arene OS to learn and anticipate the driver's needs, resulting in a personalized mobility experience. Through "Interactive Reality in Motion," the car's onboard sensors work in conjunction with digital data from the surroundings.

The future at Lexus is electric, and as the LF-ZC and LF-ZL concepts show, life on the road promises to be quite special beginning in 2026.
