Goodyear Unveils More Durable and Sustainable EV Tire

Published on January 9, 2024 in CES by Guillaume Rivard

No matter what type of vehicle you’re talking about, weight is always the enemy, affecting efficiency and increasing wear—from suspension and steering components to tires.

Electric vehicles are particularly a concern due to their heavy batteries. As a result, their tires wear out faster and create more pollution in the form of microplastic particles, volatile organic compounds and other chemicals.

Goodyear is using CES 2024 in Las Vegas this week to introduce a new, long-lasting all-season tire specifically for EVs. Called ElectricDrive 2, it contains at least 50 percent sustainable materials by weight, including the use of soybean oil, rice husk ash silica and sustainably sourced natural rubber.

The manufacturer touted the tire’s increased longevity as well as its asymmetric tread pattern that is optimized to improve grip and responsiveness on wet and dry roads. Meanwhile, SoundComfort Technology foam inserts help reduce road noise from the tire—good news for EV drivers since most of them revel in a quiet ride.

“We know EV drivers prioritize performance and a more-sustainable tire. The ElectricDrive 2 was designed with at least 50 percent sustainable materials, a focus on providing greater traction and maintaining a quiet ride,” said David Reese, vice president of product development at Goodyear Americas.

The Goodyear ElectricDrive 2 will be available beginning May 2024 with a selection of 17 sizes designed to fit an array of electric cars and SUVs, from Tesla models to the Chevrolet Bolt EV, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai IONIQ 5 and many more. The warranty is not specified, but its predecessor (ElectricDrive) is covered for 95,000 km.
