Hey, Toronto: 2023 TomTom Traffic Index Has More Bad News for You
We hate to tell you this, but traffic congestion is not getting any better. To wit, average speeds have dropped in 228 out of 387 global cities ranked in the latest TomTom Traffic Index. Just 77 have managed to improve them.
The study is based on data from over 600 million in-car navigation systems and smartphones.

For the second year in a row, London was the slowest city to drive in 2023. The average travel time for a 10-km trip was more than 37 minutes. Dublin (Ireland) is right behind with a time of 29 minutes and 30 seconds.
Toronto completes the podium of the most congested cities in the world. According to TomTom, the average travel time for a 10-km trip was 29 minutes last year—50 seconds more than in 2022. Drivers lost a whopping 98 hours at rush hours in all of 2023, maintaining an average speed of 18 km/h. You could ride your bicycle faster than that.
Vancouver and Winnipeg are the only two other Canadian cities to land in the global top 100 of the 2023 TomTom Traffic Index. On average, a 10-km drive takes over 23 minutes and 19 minutes, respectively.
Montreal is not too far behind, as you can see. London, Halifax, Edmonton, Hamilton and Ottawa round out the top 10 in Canada.
As for North America, Toronto is followed by Mexico, New York, Vancouver and Washington. Montreal ranks ninth.
