Mazda Unveils All-New 2025 Mazda CX-70
You've probably noticed that Mazda is at the back of the pack in the electric race. But this doesn’t take anything away from the quality and performance of current Mazda products, which is superior to many leading rivals. After the MX-30 fiasco and its ridiculously limited range, Mazda has openly pledged its allegiance to plug-in hybrid technologies, stipulating that this technology is better suited to current circumstances.
The Car Guide got a closer look at the newly revealed CX-70, the one that takes the guts out of the CX-90 to interpret the role of a mid-size SUV in the Mazda family.

Dressed to Kill
Let’s admit it, Mazda always pays particularly close attention to exterior styling. And the CX-70 follows in the footsteps of the CX-90, with a coherent line that retains the chic, even prestigious character that easily rivals the luxury brands.
This philosophy carries over into the cabin, where, like the CX-90, the CX-70 offers assembly quality that's almost beyond reproach. However, the Achilles' heel of this elegant cabin is without doubt the infotainment system, which is operated almost exclusively by the knob in the centre console – a configuration which can become highly irritating over time.
On the upside, this archaic way of doing things could be axed from future Mazda models, according to a recent report. Otherwise, the infotainment system receives a few updates, including Amazon Alexa integration.
CX-90 Powertrains
In the engine room, it's pretty much the same grocery list as the CX-90. First, the 3.3-litre turbocharged in-line mild hybrid six-cylinder, which develops between 280 and 340 hp depending on the variant on the CX90, has been elected for the base models. According to Mazda, these outputs should be similar on the CX-70.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain joins the party as well. The naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor and a battery is the same as the one you’ll find on the CX-90. We don't know the final specifications of this engine once bolted under the hood of the CX-70, but we can assume that, similar to its three-row sibling, it will output approximately 323 hp.
Given that the CX-70 is smaller than the CX-90, we can possibly hope that a few kilometres will be added to the all-electric range, which currently stands at 42 kilometres. A towing capacity of up to 5000 lb is also promised, and that’ll probably happen with the high-output inline 6.
At the time of writing, pricing information for the various CX-70 variants has yet to be released. However, we do know that it will enter the Canadian market as early as spring 2024 - so prices should be announced shortly!
