44,000 Kia Seltos SUVs Recalled in Canada, Hybrid Model Rumoured to Come
Kia is recalling over 44,000 units of its Seltos subcompact SUV in Canada, covering the 2021-2023 model years, due to a fire risk.
An investigation has found that the AWD control unit under the driver's seat may become contaminated by a mixture of salt and moisture inside the vehicle. Over time, this can lead to corrosion that could cause a short circuit.

The recall notice posted by Transport Canada claims this situation could spark a fire, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off.
Affected owners will receive a letter by mail in the coming weeks. Following an inspection of the AWD control unit, dealers will replace the control unit and other components as necessary.
Kia says it’s best to park outdoors and away from other vehicles and structures until the recall repairs have been completed, out of precaution.
Refreshed for 2024, Electrified for 2026?
The present recall does not affect the 2024 Kia Seltos, which has benefited from an extensive mid-cycle update. We took it for a spin in May of last year and then did another review earlier this year, in case you want to learn more.
The Seltos is currently Kia’s best-selling product in Canada, ahead of the Sportage, and also one of the least stolen vehicles in the country according to Equité Association. On the other hand, only 45 percent of U.S. owners would buy it again, Consumer Reports has found.
A second generation is reportedly due for 2026, and according to new information obtained by Korea Economic Daily, a hybrid variant will be part of the mix. If true, will it come all the way to our shores? We’ll see.
For now, Kia seems to be focusing more on its upcoming electric vehicles, such as the EV5 (which definitely appears to be Canada-bound), but expanding its hybrid portfolio is a possibility as consumer demand continues to evolve.
