It’s Official: New BMW M5 Touring is Coming to Canada

High-performance wagon enthusiasts have spoken and they’ll get their wish: the next-generation BMW M5 will officially come to our shores in both four-door sedan and five-door Touring configurations, a first in the history of the M5.

The online campaign launched on March 20 to gauge consumer interest has generated more than 7,200 petitions and what BMW Canada calls record-high engagement on its consumer website and social media channels.

Obviously, the M5 Touring is a niche product that only a small fraction of those 7,200 customers will actually order, but it shows that the company is listening to what people want and that there’s still a place in this SUV-dominated world for versatile, long-roof sports cars.

Just like the new BMW M5 Sedan, the M5 Touring will feature a hybrid powertrain—a plug-in hybrid, to be exact—pairing a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine with an electric motor. In the BMW XM, that combination produces 644 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque in standard trim or 738 horsepower and 738 lb-ft in Label Red trim. It also uses a 29.5kWh battery and offers an estimated range of 50 km.

On-road testing with prototypes of the new BMW M5 Touring is still underway not only in Germany but also in the U.S. More advanced tests on the Nürburgring will come next, allowing engineers to fine-tune the chassis and systems to ensure an ideal balance of track performance and everyday comfort.

An official introduction should take place this summer. BMW has said that production will start in the fall. Don’t expect the M5 Touring to land on this side of the Atlantic before 2025. How much will it cost? That’s a good question. Probably north of $150,000. And don’t forget about the federal luxury tax.
