Ford Boss Hints at Four-Door Mustang in the Future

Will Ford find another way to upset Mustang purists? The automaker did it with the launch of the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover four years ago, and it could strike again sometime in the next few years.

The iconic pony car’s success here and abroad has Ford planning an expansion of the lineup including new variants and configurations. One of those could be a four-door Mustang, CEO Jim Farley told British publication Autocar.

It’s obviously not the first time we’ve heard talks about a Mustang sedan, but now it’s coming directly from Ford.

“We will never build a Mustang that isn’t a Mustang,” he said. “For instance, there will never be room for a small, two-row Ford SUV with a Mustang badge stuck on it. But could we explore other Mustang body forms – such as a four-door or similar? I believe we could, as long as these models possess all the performance and attitude of the original.”

Before it gets there, however, Ford will add new performance-focused models. The 2025 Mustang GTD, a track monster with more than 800 horsepower, has already been revealed, but another “fun to drive” Mustang is slated to join the lineup next year. Unfortunately, details about the latter are kept under a tight wrap.

Inevitably, the Shelby GT500 will return. And what about the rumoured Mustang Raptor?

“Some people think we could mix Mustang with off-road driving,” Farley said. “Look at what Porsche has done with the 911 Dakar, and what Lamborghini has been doing [with the Huracan Sterrato]. But I’m not so sure about that.”

As for electrification, the big boss once again vowed to keep the V8 alive for “as long as God and the politicians let us,” but he also believes that “partial electric powertrains work well for performance drivers.” One thing’s for sure: you’ll never see a fully electric Mustang, as Farley made that abundantly clear.

Amen.
