2025 Volkswagen Golf R Cranked Up to 328 Horsepower, Adds ChatGPT
Just like it did with the Golf GTI, Volkswagen is making a series of changes and adding power to the Golf R for the 2025 model year.
Let’s start with the engine, whose output is increased from 315 hp to 328 hp. Peak torque, meanwhile, is up from 295 lb-ft to 310 lb-ft. The automaker has not specified the new acceleration time, but just so you know, we’ve managed to reach 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds during a previous test drive.

The Performance package, which is included as standard in Canada, adds Drift and Special (Nürburgring) drive modes, in case you forgot. You probably do remember that 2025 signals the elimination of the six-speed manual transmission, leaving only the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to play with.
The other updates to the Golf R are mostly cosmetic and technology-related. The front bumper, headlights and taillights are revised, there’s an illuminated VW badge on the grille, and new 19-inch Warmenau forged wheels are available as an option. These alloys are 8 kg lighter each and their clean design optimizes brake cooling, so you should really consider them for track use.
Inside, the main highlight for 2025 happens to be the new touchscreen, which is not only larger at 12.9 inches but also blessed with a new menu structure and improved graphics. Operation of the illuminated touch sliders for the automatic climate control and volume control is more driver-friendly. Oh, and the voice assistant is now infused with AI in the form of ChatGPT.
As for the 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster in front of the steering wheel, this one displays a G-force meter and GPS lap timer.
