Many Popular BMW Models May Catch Fire, 78,000 Units Recalled in Canada

A number of popular models from German automaker BMW have just been hit with a recall due to a fire risk. Over 78,000 units are affected in Canada alone.

We’re talking about the 2014-2016 2 Series and 4 Series, 2012-2016 3 Series, 5 Series and Z4, 2012-2015 X1, 2013-2017 X3, 2015-2018 X4 and 2016-2018 X5.

In some cases, fluid from the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system could leak on the intake air hose and enter the electrical connector for the water pump. This could cause a short circuit and possibly lead to a fire, even when the vehicle is parked and turned off.

While no such incident has been reported so far, BMW is advising owners to park outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs are completed.

Dealers will first inspect the water pump and electrical connector, then replace any of them if necessary. They will also install a shield on said connector.

Affected owners will be notified by mail in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can always visit BMW Canada’s recall website to get more details and find out if your vehicle is part of the list or not.
