Ford to Offer Free Home Charger to EV Customers in U.S., Not Canada

While Ford has significantly scaled back its electric vehicle strategy in the face of cooling demand in North America, the company still wants to encourage more and more drivers to adopt them. In fact, it has come up with a new incentive: a complimentary home charger including installation.

“Nearly 90 percent of shoppers say they would be more likely to buy an electric vehicle if they knew they could charge at home,” Ford CEO Jim Farley wrote in a LinkedIn post. “Filling up at home with electricity can be a significant cost save for many owners compared to filling up with gas. Problem is nearly half of them don’t know how home charging works1. Where do you buy the charger? Who installs it? What does it cost?”

He also believes that “it will take more than jumbo rebates” to truly break through with the millions of people interested in EVs. “It will take convenience, peace of mind, and expert service.”

That’s why customers who buy or lease a retail Ford Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning or E-Transit will take a complimentary 240V home charger with them or have it delivered. A Ford-certified technician will then come out to install it at no charge for a standard install. Ford Pro fleet customers, meanwhile, will receive a commercial charging cash incentive.

Unfortunately, all of this is for the U.S. only at the present time. A Ford Canada spokesperson, Megan Joakim, has told The Car Guide that “we are reviewing the plan, including early findings from the U.S., to determine what’s best for the Canadian market.”

Remember, Chevrolet used to cover the cost of the standard installation of a 240V charging home outlet for Canadian customers who purchased or leased a Bolt EV or Bolt EUV. Right now, however, those who opt for an Equinox EV, Blazer EV or Silverado EV need to pay either $799 or $1,899 for one of two GM PowerUP home chargers offered by the automaker.
