Meet the First-Ever, Battery-Powered MINI John Cooper Works
MINI is electrifying the 2024 Paris Motor Show this week with the world premiere of two models, namely the high-performance John Cooper Works version of the brand’s next-gen electric hatchback (the Canadian launch of which will be significantly delayed) and the all-new, electric-only MINI Aceman (not confirmed for Canada yet).
Let’s focus on the former. As a reminder, the entry-level Cooper SE gains a more powerful motor that delivers 215 horsepower instead of 181 horsepower. Consequently, acceleration from 0-100 km/h is now achieved in 6.7 seconds instead of 7.3 seconds, MINI claims.

It turns out that the new John Cooper Works model is less powerful than we anticipated, but with 255 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, it’s quick enough to sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds.
Here’s a fun twist: drivers can activate the go-kart mode by pressing the boost paddle on the sport steering wheel, which temporarily provides an extra 27 horsepower for passing manoeuvres and zippier acceleration.
The electric motor is fed by a 54.2kWh battery that is said to enable up to 371 km of range based on the WLTP test cycle used in Europe—most definitely less than 300 km if we were to use more realistic North American standards.
JCW-specific suspension settings maximize handling along with the performance tires fitted as standard. Powerful brakes with Chili Red callipers featuring a white JCW logo ensure precise and safe deceleration.
MINI designers didn’t leave all the work to the engineering team, mind you. For instance, the red, white and black John Cooper Works logo is reminiscent of the checkered flag in motorsport and adorns the octagonal front grille in high-gloss black. Black side skirts, aeroblades at the level of the C-pillar and the accentuated rear spoiler optimize aerodynamics. Other highlights include subtle red accents, a sporty rear diffuser, a contrasting roof in Chili Red and aerodynamically optimized 18-inch wheels.
Inside, a black and red pattern adorns the knitted surface of the dashboard. When the ambient lighting is switched on, the light graphics illuminate the panoramic roof as an exclusive feature. The seats get a unique JCW treatment, as well.
As mentioned up top, the new MINI Cooper SE will be delayed in Canada and the U.S. due to 100-percent tariffs on Chinese-built electric vehicles that recently went into effect. The automaker (BMW) will have to move production to a different location before selling units on our shores. When will that be? Nobody knows at this point. So, if you were waiting for that car or the John Cooper Works model, your patience will be seriously tested.
