Subaru’s Next-Gen “Strong Hybrid” System Comes Into Focus

We now know a little more about Subaru’s next-generation hybrid system, which will debut in the upcoming Crosstrek Hybrid that’s set to launch in Japan this December.

Dubbed “Strong Hybrid,” the highly efficient powertrain is built around a newly developed 2.5-litre flat-four engine that produces 158 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque. The other part of the equation consists of a rear-mounted, 1.1kWh lithium-ion battery and a pair of electric motors up front.

One motor drives the wheels and the other serves as a generator. The former delivers 118 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque. Combined system output is not specified, however. Subaru says the traction motor can serve as the main power source "in a wide range of situations," likely enabling pure electric driving over short distances.

In typical Subie fashion, symmetrical AWD is standard. The system mechanically couples the front and rear wheels through the propeller shaft instead of doing things electronically.

Ultimately, the automaker is promising a 20-percent increase in fuel efficiency over the current hybrid setup that’s available in Japan—even more fuel savings versus the conventionally powered Crosstrek we have here in Canada, which is rated at 8 L/100 km. Owners will also appreciate having a 120V/1,500W outlet in the cargo area to power appliances or other electric devices, say on camping trips.

In addition to the Crosstrek Hybrid, which still has to be confirmed for Canada, Subaru will offer a gas-electric Forester for the 2026 model year, but that vehicle is expected to feature a Toyota-derived hybrid system.
