Next-Gen Subaru Outback Looks Like True SUV in Spy Shots

The evolution of the Subaru Outback from a conventional wagon to a proper SUV will continue with the next generation, which is expected to debut for the 2026 model year.

The current Outback (2020-present) and the previous generation could both be described as crossovers. In fact, when debating our annual Best Buys, we at The Car Guide have no other choice but to evaluate the Outback alongside other two-row midsize SUVs.

Spy shots of a camouflaged, next-generation Outback, which we can’t show you here, have started to pop up online, revealing a vehicle that no longer looks like a high-riding wagon and more like a true SUV.

This new Outback will continue to slot between the Forester (fully redesigned for 2025, as pictured below) and the three-row Ascent (also due for a redesign), but it appears it will adopt similar proportions in the process.

From what we’ve seen on those spy shots, the massive, bridge-type roof rails are staying. Visible through the camo are new headlights and daytime running lights that seem to be split from each other, following a recent trend across the auto industry.

The flatter roofline, more angular bumpers and wheel arches, as well as more rugged grille and wheel designs all suggest a boxier, more SUV-like Outback, although it’s hard to tell which model we’re actually looking at—Wilderness or another.

There are no pictures of the interior and no details about the powertrain. An official debut is likely to take place early in 2025. In the meantime, Subaru is expected to use the Los Angeles Auto Show in late November to unveil the highly anticipated 2026 Forester Hybrid. We’ll keep you posted.
