Third-Gen 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan Adds Power, Drops Third Row
Classic or just old? Whatever you want to call the Volkswagen Tiguan, the current generation dating back to 2018 is due for an overhaul. We’ve already seen the third-generation European variant, but now it’s time for the North American-spec Tiguan to make its debut.
The German automaker came to the 2024 Los Angeles Auto Show this week to introduce a more modern, more powerful and more technologically advanced 2025 Tiguan, which is expected to go on sale in the U.S. and Canada by next spring.

New Platform, Racier Looks
The redesigned Volkswagen Tiguan is based on an evolution of the existing platform, called MQB evo, and boasts a slightly longer wheelbase than its predecessor. Aesthetically, it looks racier and more athletic. The top part of the front end is reminiscent of the all-electric ID.4 crossover, while the lower section has that huge black mask incorporating the grille and air intakes.
The model you see here is a Tiguan R-Line riding on 20-inch wheels. The base Trendline and mid-grade Comfortline models also get new-look wheels. Designers have boldly revised the rear end, too, with full-width taillights and a black bumper garnish emphasizing the SUV’s sporty stance. What’s more, three new body colours are available including Avocado Green Pearl, Ascot Grey and Monterey Blue Pearl.
A More Upscale, Two-Row Interior
When it comes to the interior, it’s safe to say the Tiguan was falling behind most if not all competitors, so Volkswagen has raised its game and focused on creating on a more upscale, more cutting-edge cabin. Premium materials, such as genuine American walnut open-pore wood, a wrapped and double-stitched centre console, upgraded Savona leather and cloth seats with an embossed design are part of the package. The shifter has moved onto the steering column, freeing up the large centre console to enhance storage space.
Drivers face Volkswagen’s newest 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro system as standard, along with a sleek new 12.9-inch centre touchscreen powered by the MIB4 infotainment system. There’s now a rotary dial control in the console for easy adjustment of volume along with Drive Mode Select. Newly available ‘Atmospheres’ combine synchronized ambient lighting and audio settings for a unique mix of sights and sounds. A head-up display, 15-inch infotainment screen, premium 12-speaker harman/kardon stereo and seats with full-back massage and ventilation are available, too. Pretty amazing, isn’t it?
On the flip side, some potential customers will be disappointed by the fact that the 2025 Tiguan is limited to a two-row configuration. Sure, the optional third-row seats in the outgoing model are cramped even for children, but they helped the German compact SUV stand out from most rivals. Volkswagen failed to specify cargo capacity during the premiere.
More Power, Still No Electrification
Under the hood, look for an updated version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre EA888 four-cylinder engine that makes 201 horsepower, up from the previous 184. The torque rating is missing, but we assume it stays at 221 lb-ft. The 2025 Tiguan promises to be a little bit quicker off the line, with engineers simultaneously reducing its weight by 77 kg (170 lbs) in large part through the use of aluminum in the suspension and high-strength, hot-formed steel in the body structure. The eight-speed transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive system both return.
Fuel consumption figures will be released at a later time, but Volkswagen claims they’ll be improved from the 2024 model’s (9.4-9.7 L/100 km depending on the trim level). That’s a good thing. However, we’re still waiting for an electrified option to show up. VW executives in North America have previously expressed a desire to add a plug-in hybrid to the lineup in the near future. The wait continues.
As for safety, the Tiguan introduces four new airbags—driver knee, centre, and rear side airbags—for a total of ten. It also includes Volkswagen’s suite of IQ.DRIVE Level 2 driver assistance features standard across all trims. Light Assist, Park Distance Control and Exit Warning are now standard, while Park Assist Plus is available.
