2026 Kia Sportage Gets Mid-Cycle Update Inside and Out
Los Angeles, California—Introduced three years ago, the fifth-generation Kia Sportage gets a mid-cycle update for 2026 that includes a refreshed exterior, improved connectivity, new displays and advanced powertrains. The Korean compact SUV will once again be available in conventionally powered, hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) configurations.
The 2026 lineup is a pretty extensive one. The standard Sportage offers LX, EX, SX, SX-Prestige, X-Line and X-Pro Prestige models, the last one boasting increased off-road capability. The Sportage HEV can be specified in new S or X-Line trim in addition to the LX, EX and SX-Prestige models, while the Sportage PHEV comes in two trim levels including X-Line and X-Line Prestige.

The 2026 Kia Sportage embraces the Korean automaker’s “Opposites United” design language, which can be found on a number of Kia models these days including both ICE and EVs. Remember, its top design chief is Karim Habib, who grew up in Montreal. While sporting a more modern and more rugged appearance, the refreshed Sportage incorporates the new Star Map lighting signature that’s spreading across the Kia portfolio, as well as new-look alloy wheels ranging from 17-10 inches in size.
Improved Connectivity
Inside, the curved digital interface combines dual 12.3-inch displays. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is standard on all Sportage models, while Kia Connect is reserved for a select few. A new 10-inch head-up display is available, too, which is a rare thing in the compact SUV segment.
The audio system comes from Harman Kardon and a wireless charging pad for smartphones is included as standard. What’s more, the 2026 Kia Sportage benefits from a full suite of advanced driver assistance systems including Highway Driving Assist 2 with adaptive cruise control and turn signal-activated lane changes.
Three Powertrain Options
There is no change to the naturally aspirated, 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 187 hp through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Base models settle for front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is optional. Maximum towing capacity with this mill is rated at 2,500 lbs.
The Sportage HEV pairs a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with a revised electric motor. Combined output is increased from 227 hp to 231 hp. This electrified powertrain is available with all-wheel drive and can tow up to 2,000 lbs.
Finally, the Sportage PHEV relies on the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine and a 72kW motor for a total of 268 hp (previously 261 hp). All-wheel drive is standard and maximum towing capacity is rated at 2,000 lbs. The 13.8kWh battery is unchanged and provides a zero-emission range of 55 km.
The ICE-powered 2026 Kia Sportage models will be assembled at the company’s West Point factory in Georgia (U.S.), while the HEV and PHEV models will continue to be built in Gwangju, South Korea. Units will arrive at Canadian dealerships in the second quarter of 2025, with pricing to be announced shortly before launch.
