More Ram Heavy Duty Trucks Recalled for ABS, ESC Issues
If you own a previous-generation Ram Heavy Duty, you might have experienced a problem with either the anti-lock brakes (ABS) or the electronic stability control and traction control systems. Well, you’re not alone.
In the U.S., 1,460 field reports, 4,622 customer assistance records and over 53,000 warranty claims potentially related to a malfunctioning brake hydraulic control unit have been logged so far. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which opened an investigation nearly two years ago and worked with the automaker to test a ‘failed’ customer part, is now recalling approximately 317,000 trucks from 2017-2018.

Affected models include the Ram 2500 and 3500 as well as chassis-cab versions of the 3500, 4500 and 5500. The number of trucks to be recalled in Canada amounts to 22,119.
Surprisingly, and fortunately, the automaker isn’t aware of any accidents or injuries that would have been directly caused by a malfunctioning brake hydraulic control unit.
Ram dealers will replace the hydraulic control unit free of charge. In the meantime, drivers who notice the ABS warning lamp lighting up on their instrument panel should be extra careful on the road.
Back in June of this year, a similar issue with the ABS and ESC systems led to a recall on the 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 (and the Dodge Durango). The fix in this case was a simple software update to the ABS module.
