New Canadian Winter Tests Reveal Fastest-Charging EVs

Published on February 21, 2025 in Electric by Julien Amado

Earlier this month, the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) hosted a special EV drive event with a number of staff members and auto journalists—including The Car Guide’s Julien Amado—testing over a dozen different electric vehicles until their batteries ran out of power in order to find out which ones perform best in the cold. You can see the results here.

Another part of the evaluation involved fast charging at public DC chargers. As you know, cold temperatures also affect charging speeds. All the vehicles were charged from 10-80 percent, and those that feature battery preconditioning for faster charging had the system turned on. This all took place in minus 15 degrees Celsius weather.

Below are the results, counting down from the slowest-charging EV to the fastest-charging EV based on how much range they were able to regain in 15 minutes. CAA also calculated the time it took for each vehicle to return to 80 percent as well as how much power their battery managed to extract from a DC fast charger on average.

Note: While the Honda Prologue was included in the range part of the evaluation, a technical problem compromised the fast charging test, so you won’t find it among the list.
