Nissan to Revive Xterra as Electric SUV in 2027

Among the many new Nissan and Infiniti models that will launch in Canada and the U.S. by the end of fiscal year 2027 will be not only the third-generation LEAF—reimagined as a small crossover—but also a brand new EV that the automaker describes as an “adventure-focused SUV.”

On the teaser released by Nissan today, we can see all the way in the background a boxy-looking vehicle that is certainly not unlike the long-discontinued Xterra.

The headlight signature is similarly squared up, character lines on the hood emphasize the muscular look, and raised roof rails confirm the SUV’s purpose and aspirations.

On December 23 of last year, Nissan applied for a new trademark on the “Xterra” name to the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The application requested a trademark for use on "motor vehicles, namely, automobiles, sport utility vehicles, and structural parts therefore." It was approved for use through August 31, 2027.

It’s not immediately clear whether Nissan seriously wants to take on the likes of the Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, but its new off-road-ready SUV will be the only one with pure electric power. As such, direct competitors could include the upcoming Jeep Recon and Scout Traveler.

Nissan says production at the Canton, Mississippi plant will begin sometime in late 2027 using U.S.-made batteries supplied by SK On. Excited yet? We sure are.
