GM Recalls Trucks, SUVs With 6.2L V8 That May Lose Power or Fail

General Motors has announced a safety recall on full-size SUVs and pickups equipped with the automaker’s 6.2-litre V8. This follows a series of complaints, engine replacements, class actions and investigations.

As we reported in January, nearly 900,000 vehicles in the U.S. were under the microscope of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The number of units to be recalled is close to 597,000 in the U.S. and just shy of 50,000 in Canada. Affected models include the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV—all covering the 2021 through 2024 model years.

GM says manufacturing defects in the crankshaft and/or connecting rods—the nature of which isn’t specified—could lead to engine damage, loss of propulsion or failure.

The remedy for vehicles that fail the inspection is not yet specified, but all indications are that the engine will have to be replaced, which is likely to cost GM a fair amount of money given the scale of the recall.

Affected owners will receive a recall notice from the company starting later this spring. As for units still on dealer lots, they will have to undergo the aforementioned inspection and necessary work before they can be sold and delivered.
