Confirmed: New Mitsubishi EV Based on Future Nissan LEAF to Launch in 2026

Mitsubishi today confirmed it will work with its Alliance partner Nissan to launch a battery electric vehicle to market in the U.S. and Canada starting in the summer of 2026.

Dealers were initially told about the plan during a meeting at the beginning of this year, but the news had yet to be made official.

The new Mitsubishi EV will largely be derived from the next-generation Nissan LEAF which, as previously reported, will morph into a small, coupe-like crossover. That one is slated to hit the market in March of 2026.

Both vehicles will ride on Nissan’s CMF-EV modular platform. Look for a built-in NACS charging port enabling direct access to the Tesla Supercharger network.

Further details about the new Mitsubishi EV, including the name, design, technical specifications, pricing and on-sale timing, will be shared as part of future announcements.

“We believe Canadians today want a mix of powertrain options,” said Kenichi Kawaji, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Canada. “Adding a battery electric vehicle to our lineup will deliver a blend of internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, so that our customers have the choice of technology that best suits their needs.”

In the “Momentum 2030” business plan announced in May of 2024, Mitsubishi said it would launch a new or completely refreshed vehicle each year between 2026 and 2030. Among them will be two all-new models for market segments in which the company does not currently compete.

Before we get there, Mitsubishi’s lineup now consists of only three models following the discontinuation of the Mirage hatchback—the 15-year-old RVR, the Eclipse Cross and the Outlander. The gas variant of the Outlander has just received a mid-cycle update. Other than that, changes for 2025 are fairly minor.
