Celebrating Canada’s Auto Industry and Products

There’s no better day than Canada Day to remind everyone from coast to coast that Canada is the world’s 13th-largest vehicle producer and seventh-largest auto exporter by value. Vehicle and parts manufacturing account for about 10 percent of the country’s manufacturing GDP and 23 percent of its manufacturing trade.

Four automakers including General Motors, Stellantis, Honda and Toyota currently operate assembly plants in the country—all of them in Ontario—while a fifth (Ford) is retooling its own factory in Oakville to build Super Duty trucks. On top of that, nearly 700 parts suppliers (such as Magna, Linamar and Martinrea) feed those plants

Governments and OEMs are also pledging tens of billions of dollars to build domestic EV supply chains, but establishing a full “Made-in-Canada” automaker remains a huge challenge, as evidenced by Project Arrow.
